Review : The Revenant Games by Margie Fuston

Cover image of The Revenant Games by Margie Fuston. On a black background their is a tangle of leaves, thorns, and mushroom, winding up the page. The leaves are a teal-green, the vines a softer, lighter, sage-adjacent green with red thorns, and the mushrooms are a vibrant pale orange, just shy of Tangerine in colour. In the bottom centre a blade and staff, both blood red, are crossed. Just above the the name of the book [The Revenant Games] is written in an embellished, but quite simple font, in white. Right at the top of the image, peeking out from between the vines, is the silhouette of a town rendered in gold. The author's name [Margie Fuston] is at the very bottom of the image in orange.
★★★★

The Revenant Games is somewhere between The Hunger Games, and every YA love-triangle-spunky-girl fantasy novel ever. I mean that in the best way. I really enjoyed this book. It took me a while to get into it, and I did find some of Bly’s inner-narration a little repetitive, but overall I tore through this book, and loved every moment of it!

In a world where humans are more spell-fodder than people there are few opportunities to seize power, and even fewer times when magic is not the enemy. After the sudden, tragic death of her sister, Bly is determined to win the The Revenant Games for the Witches, and earn a resurrection. When her best friend is struck down, she resolves to play both sides of the Games, and earn him eternal life as a vampire as well. Filled with intrigue, violence, questions of love and loyalty, and a unique magic system, The Revenant Games is exciting and moving from start to finish.

I will be finishing out this series, and look forward to Fuston’s future twisty instalments!
